About this policy

Parallax Interactive, LLC (“Company,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the “Are You Fluent?” mobile application (“App”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the App.

We are the controller of the personal data described in this policy: we decide why and how it is processed. This policy covers the App for iPhone, iPad and Android, and this website, areyoufluentapp.com.

Information we collect

Account information

When you create an account, we collect an app account identifier and authentication token to manage your session and save your progress. If you link Google Sign-In or Sign in with Apple, we collect the account identifier, email address, and display name returned by that provider when available.

If you use Sign in with Apple, we also keep an encrypted authorization token from Apple, only so that we can ask Apple to revoke the App's access to your Apple account when you delete your account.

Usage data

We collect information about how you interact with the App, including:

  • Language pairs and difficulty tiers selected
  • Quiz answers and scores
  • Streak and calendar data
  • App session duration and feature usage

Device information

We collect device locale to optimize your experience and set default language preferences. If you explicitly enable push notifications, we collect a random app installation identifier, Firebase Cloud Messaging token, and platform so we can deliver notifications.

Content reports

If you report a problem with a lesson, we collect the selected reason, the lesson or question reference, and any optional details you submit so we can investigate and correct the content.

Optional analytics and diagnostics

Outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, usage analytics and crash-report sharing are enabled by default. In those regions both stay off until you agree: either in Google's consent message, by consenting to "Store and/or access information on a device" and to Google as a partner, or by turning them on in Settings > Privacy. Declining in the message, or later withdrawing in Settings > Ad privacy choices, turns both off; a new answer there replaces earlier choices made with the switches. You can turn either on or off separately in Settings > Privacy at any time. All learning features remain available if they are off.

To know whether your region requires consent, the App checks with Google's consent service (User Messaging Platform) at every launch, without showing anything; this sends your IP address and device information to Google. Until the answer is known, nothing is sent: analytics events wait in memory and a crash on the first launch stays on the device, and both are sent only if your region does not require consent, otherwise they are deleted. If you consent later, only future reports are sent.

  • Usage analytics: While usage analytics is on, Firebase Analytics processes app interactions, app-instance identifiers, device and operating-system information, and approximate location derived from network information to help us understand feature usage.
  • Crash reports: While crash reports are on, Firebase Crashlytics processes crash reports, stack traces, app version, device information, and installation identifiers to help us diagnose failures.

We do not intentionally include your email, display name, authentication tokens, or free-form answers in analytics events or crash messages. Advertising identifier collection and advertising personalization signals are disabled for Firebase Analytics.

Turning sharing off stops future collection by that service; disabling analytics resets its local app-instance data, and disabling crash reports deletes unsent reports on the device. Data already sent remains subject to the service's retention and deletion controls; contact us if you wish to exercise your data rights.

Advertising

Optional rewarded ads are provided through Google AdMob. The advertising SDK may process your IP address (including approximate location), device or advertising identifiers where available and permitted, ad interactions, and diagnostic information for ad delivery, measurement, and fraud prevention. We do not request precise device location for ads.

We request rewarded ads only after you choose to watch a video. To verify a reward, we send AdMob a random, single-use reference and receive a signed confirmation. This reference does not contain your email, name, or app account identifier. Our server links it to your learning context to award the star once and prevent duplicate rewards. Outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, advertising privacy choices are separate from the analytics and crash-report switches; in those regions your answer in Google's consent message also decides whether usage analytics and crash reports are on (see Optional analytics and diagnostics).

On iPhone and iPad, the App does not ask for permission to track you (App Tracking Transparency), so your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) is not available to the App or to Google, and the App requests only non-personalized ads. On Android, Google may use your device's advertising ID. Google uses this information to deliver and measure ads and to prevent fraud and, only if you agree where the law requires consent, to show you personalized ads. If you don't agree, you can still watch videos for rewards; the ads just won't be personalized. Google acts as an independent controller for some of this processing.

Your ad choices

  • Consent message: in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google's consent message asks for your choices before ads are requested; the same message also decides whether usage analytics and crash reports may be collected. In US states with privacy laws, you can opt out of the sale or sharing of your data for targeted advertising. Where these choices apply, you can review or change them at any time in Settings > Ad privacy choices.
  • iPhone and iPad: the App never asks to track you. You can also stop all apps from asking in iOS Settings, under Privacy & Security > Tracking.
  • Android: you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's settings (usually Settings > Google > Ads, or Settings > Privacy > Ads).

This website

This website is delivered through Amazon CloudFront from our server on Amazon Web Services, which process your IP address and basic request information to deliver the pages to you. We have not turned on access logs for the website. It uses no cookies and no analytics, and it loads nothing from other sites.

What we don't collect

  • No payment information: there are no in-app purchases.
  • No precise location: the App doesn't ask for location permission.
  • No access to your contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
  • No chat, public profile or leaderboard. The only text you can write in the App is the optional details of a content report.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide and maintain the App's functionality
  • Save your learning progress, streaks, and preferences
  • Personalize content based on your selected language pair and difficulty tier
  • Maintain account security, sessions, and notification preferences
  • Understand app usage, diagnose errors, and improve reliability
  • Provide optional rewarded advertising, measure ad performance, and prevent invalid traffic
  • Communicate important updates about the App when you opt in to notifications

Under the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation, we rely on:

  • Contract (Art. 6(1)(b)): providing the App: your account and sessions, optional Google Sign-In or Sign in with Apple, saving your progress, streaks, cards and settings, awarding and verifying rewards, the notifications you turn on, and deleting your account.
  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): usage analytics and crash reports while they are on, outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland; handling content reports to correct lessons; showing non-personalized ads, measuring them and preventing ad fraud, which keeps the App free; and keeping accounts and our servers secure, for example by limiting how many requests a single address can make. Our interest is to offer a free app that works well, is accurate and keeps improving. You can object at any time (see Your rights), and you can turn usage analytics and crash reports off in Settings > Privacy.
  • Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): usage analytics and crash reports in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland; personalized ads, and storing or reading information on your device for ads, where the law requires consent. You can withdraw it at any time in Settings > Ad privacy choices.
  • Legal obligation (Art. 6(1)(c)): keeping or disclosing data when the law requires it, for example to answer a valid request from an authority.

Data storage and security

Your account data and learning progress are stored in a database on our server, hosted by Amazon Web Services in the United States (Ohio). Data travels between the App, our server and our service providers over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). On your device, the App keeps your session in the operating system's secure storage. Our server only accepts web traffic through Amazon CloudFront, and its database can't be reached from the internet. However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your data, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.

Data retention

We retain your account data and learning progress for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account in the App from Settings or use our account deletion page to request deletion outside the App.

  • Account, linked sign-in, progress, streaks, cards, coins, settings and content reports: until you delete your account, or until we delete particular data at your request.
  • Notification token and installation identifier on our servers: until you turn notifications off, delete your account, or the token stops working.
  • Reward verification references and AdMob confirmations: until you delete your account, so that each reward is given only once. An unused reference expires one hour after it is issued.
  • Usage analytics (Firebase Analytics): event-level data is kept for 14 months, then deleted automatically. Aggregated reports, which don't identify you, may be kept longer.
  • Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics): 90 days, then deleted automatically; see Firebase's privacy information.
  • Ads (AdMob): as set out in Google's policies; see how Google retains data.
  • Emails you send us: as long as we need them to answer you and to show how we handled your request.
  • Deletion records, operational logs and backups: as described on our account deletion page.
  • Data we must keep by law: as long as that law requires.

Third-party services

The App may use third-party services for:

  • Hosting: Amazon Web Services hosts our server, its database and this website, and delivers them through Amazon CloudFront.
  • Email: Google Workspace hosts our mailbox, so the emails you send us and our replies are stored by Google.
  • Content Generation: We use Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini, through Google Cloud's Vertex AI) to generate AI-assisted quiz content, explanations, and artwork. We may send source material, target language, difficulty tier, and generation instructions to these services. We do not send account identifiers, email addresses, display names, quiz answers, progress, notification tokens, or device identifiers to AI content generation providers.
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging: If you enable notifications, Firebase Cloud Messaging is used to deliver push notifications. On iPhone and iPad, they are delivered through Apple Push Notification service.
  • Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Crashlytics: These services provide usage analytics and crash diagnostics as described above. See Firebase's privacy information.
  • Google AdMob and User Messaging Platform: These services deliver optional rewarded ads and manage advertising privacy choices. Where required, we ask for consent before requesting ads. You can decline consent or manage the purposes and partners shown in the consent message. Where applicable, reopen advertising privacy options from Settings to change or withdraw your choices. Declining consent does not prevent you from using the learning features; ad availability may vary. See how Google uses information from apps that use its services.
  • Google Sign-In: If you choose to link your Google account, Google provides authentication data so we can connect your account.
  • Sign in with Apple: If you choose to link your Apple account, Apple provides authentication data so we can connect your account. When you delete your account, we ask Apple to revoke the App's access.
  • App Distribution: The App is distributed through Google Play and the Apple App Store, which have their own privacy practices.

Some lessons are inspired by public current-event sources and may show source/date attribution. These sources are used for educational language context; the App is not a news service. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third-party services.

Service providers that receive personal data process it on our behalf under their data processing terms; Google acts as an independent controller for some of the processing for AdMob ads. We may also disclose data when the law requires it, or to protect our users, our rights or the safety of others. If Parallax Interactive, LLC is ever merged or sold, your data may be transferred to the new owner, who will have to respect this policy. We don't sell your personal data for money.

International transfers

We are based in the United States, and our server and database are hosted by Amazon Web Services in the United States. Google and Apple may process data in the United States and in other countries. If you use the App from outside the United States, including from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, your data is transferred to the United States. For these transfers we rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, and its UK and Swiss counterparts, for companies certified under them, such as Google LLC and Amazon Web Services, and on the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission that are part of the providers' data processing terms. You can ask us for a copy of these safeguards at help@prllxlabs.com.

Children's privacy

The App is not directed at children and is not meant for anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Object to or restrict processing of your data
  • Data portability
  • Withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting processing before you withdrew it

To exercise any of these rights, email help@prllxlabs.com. If you linked Google Sign-In or Sign in with Apple, tell us the email address of that account so we can find it. A guest account isn't linked to an email address, so we may not be able to identify it from an email alone; you can delete it yourself in the App. We may ask you to confirm that the account is yours. Usage analytics and crash reports are tied to random installation identifiers rather than to your account, so we usually can't single them out from an email request. We answer within one month; if a request is complex, we may need up to two more months and will tell you why.

In the App you can delete your account (Settings > Delete account), turn usage analytics and crash reports on or off (Settings > Privacy) and, where offered, change your ad choices (Settings > Ad privacy choices).

If you think we have not handled your data properly, you can complain to the data protection authority of the country where you live or work, or where you think the problem happened. In the United Kingdom, that is the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). We'd appreciate the chance to sort it out with you first.

Extra information for some regions

California and other US states

In the last 12 months we collected these categories of personal information: identifiers (the app account identifier, installation identifiers, notification tokens, app-instance and Crashlytics installation identifiers, the Android advertising ID, IP address, and, if you link Google or Apple, the account identifier, email address and name); internet or other electronic network activity (how you use the App, your answers and scores, analytics events and ad interactions); approximate location derived from your IP address; and the content of reports you send us. We collect them from you, your device and, if you link an account, Google or Apple, for the purposes described in this policy, and we disclose them to the service providers listed above.

We don't sell personal information for money. However, on Android, when personalized ads are allowed, Google's use of your advertising ID and ad interactions may count as “selling” or “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising under some state laws. To opt out, use Settings > Ad privacy choices in the App, and reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's settings. On iPhone and iPad, the App requests only non-personalized ads. We don't knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16. We don't use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes that would give you a right to limit it.

Depending on your state, you have the right to know and access your data, correct it, delete it, and opt out of its sale or sharing and of targeted advertising. Contact us at help@prllxlabs.com; an authorized agent can also do it for you. We will verify your request and won't treat you differently for using your rights.

Canada (including Québec)
